A Royal Visit to Melbourne by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh in March 1954 gave rise to the thought that Rotary could in some way become involved.
A meeting was held at the “Chevron Hotel” on 14 January 1954. Present were two members of the Rotary Clubs of Melbourne, Williamstown, Hawthorn, Northcote, Footscray and Brunswick-Coburg (our representatives were Denzil Don and Harry Chuck). It was decided that two stands be built close to the Melbourne Town Hall with a seating accommodation for 625 people at a charge of one pound ten shillings per person. Melbourne South Rotary Club joined in later.
Our Club supplied transport and paid seating for 35 from St. Mary’s School for the Deaf, Dalgany Portsea, 25 patients from Mount Royal Hospital, mothers and children from the Helping Hand Association for sub-normal children (Coburg Branch), members of the Brunswick Auxiliary for the Blind and several members of the Brunswick Pioneers Social Club. Quite a number of our members bought tickets for themselves and friends.
The 22nd Annual District Conference of the 28th District was held at Sorrento-Portsea from Saturday 27 March to Wednesday 31 March 1954.
