For the first five months of this Rotary year, Fred Hopley was President, but due to ill health was forced to step down. Mick Hudson carried on for the remainder of the year.
Our Rotary Club provided distinctive uniforms for the children in charge of the School Crossings at the South Brunswick State School.
The Club organised a Holiday Camp at Axedale through the Melbourne City Mission and one hundred and twenty five pounds by our Club and one hundred pounds by Collingwood Rotary Club was given to accommodate forty boys and forty girls, all underprivileged.
The Christmas picnic was again held at Mick Hudson’s Sorrento home. The Asian nurses were collected from the various hospitals and both the nurses and the children were given a present by Father Christmas who was transported by the Sorrento Fire Brigade.
Another Arts & Crafts Competition was held for children under the age of 16 years in the Brunswick Town Hall. Some 356 entries from children from various schools entered the competition.
The Cyd Elwood Productions produced “Rio Rita” and our Club sold 157 tickets at a cost of 10 shillings each; they produce these plays and then donate the takings, after expenses, to the various Service Clubs and Charities who have assisted. Our Club received a cheque for forty pounds.
The “Brunswick Charities Trading Centre Opportunity Shop” was set up by our Rotary Club in Sydney Road and had been in existence at two addresses in Sydney Road which were not satisfactory. Early in March 1961, a shop was secured at 696 Sydney Road, Brunswick. A good deal of renovation was required, so on the weekend of 15 and 16 April a working bee was organised from members of our Club to clean down, fit out and paint the inside of the premises; this was also carried on to the following weekend. The costs involved were borne by various members of the Club.
At 11.30am on Thursday 11 May 1961, John Coleman opened the shop for trading and his first customer was Ron Barassi. The members of our Club gave generously all kinds of goods to assist the “Opportunity Shop”. In the first two months of operation the shop distributed six hundred pounds to the four charities – one hundred and fifty pounds to each. The Brunswick Creche, Brunswick Boys & Girls Club, Don Bosco Youth Club and the War Widows & Widowed Mothers Association.
