District Governor: Ern Granger (Rotary Club of Bendigo)
President: Jim Whelan
Secretary: Bill Foy
Treasurer: Bill Gillard
Our Club is very grateful to the many helpers and members that have donated gifts of all description to the Opportunity Shop, and to the ladies who are knitting garments from the wool that has been donated by various people.
The main project for this Rotary year was a theatre night held at “His Majesty’s Theatre” and the musical presented was “Carnival”; the cost of the tickets was two pounds each and the proceeds were to assist the Brotherhood of St. Lawrence.
At our meeting on 1 November the guest speaker was Sir Edmund Herring who, on behalf of our Club, presented a cheque to Mr David Scott of the Brotherhood of St. Lawrence for five hundred pounds.
On 9 October the 10th Anniversary of the formation of our Club was held at Blythwood and the members and their ladies spent a very successful evening.
Earlier this year the Principal of the Brunswick Girls Secondary School was the guest speaker at one of our meetings and explained the problems the girls had at the school, particularly for those who intended to further their education.
Due to the efforts of our Club two of our members were appointed to the ‘School Advisory Council’. This led to the first and most important step to improve the school, that of commencing an “Academic Course” to run currently with its present “Domestic Arts Course”. This was seen as the first step in the conversion of the school to a High School.
Again due to the efforts of our Club the Education Department effected considerable improvements and increased accommodation at the school. The Principal, Miss Ruby Tout, sent a letter to the Club expressing her sincere appreciation of our help.
