The information on this page is from the Club’s publication “A History of the Rotary Club of Brunswick” Golden Jubilee 2nd edition, 2003:

District Governor: Len Greenwood (Rotary Club of Wangaratta)
President: John Lazzaro
Secretary: Felix Monger
Treasurer: Will Moulding

The main Project for this year was to increase the membership of our Club as we had only 40 members at the beginning of this Rotary Year. However, a determined effort by the members of our Club resulted in an induction of 15 members; unfortunately two of our members passed away and a further four resigned making an increase of nine to the Club.

Following the Board suggestion in the last Rotary Year that a feasibility study be made regarding the formation of a Sheltered Workshop, the Board this Rotary Year decided to proceed with the feasibility study.

Two members of our Club visited the Sheltered Workshop in Oakleigh which was employing 40 mentally retarded persons. On hearing their report the Directors expressed enthusiasm and recommended that a similar project be established in Brunswick in conjunction with Mount Royal Home.

Further investigations revealed that a quantity of suitable work was available for occupational therapy for the handicapped in a proposed Sheltered Workshop.

A Ladies Night was held at “Blythwood” on 22 August and the highlight was a Ladies Fashion Parade.

William Curtis Rotary Foundation Scholar was under our Club guidance and supervision throughout the year.

A new cooking range was purchased for Hartnett House which was run by the Melbourne City Mission; at this time the hostel cared for unmarried mothers with their children.

The Directors of our Club decided against the setting up of an “Interact Club”, the reason being that the students were too pre-occupied with their studies.

A special luncheon meeting was held to enable members to bring along “New Australian” employees as visitors.

A Public Speaking Competition, in which the children of the various schools in Brunswick competed, was held at Peter Peppard’s Centennary Motors showrooms. The finals were held at our weekly luncheon and suitable prizes were presented to the winners of the various sections.

Correspondence was maintained with our matched Club in Japan, Hamamatau East, and our paired Clubs Danbury (U.S.A.) and East Greenwich (U.S.A.).

A Careers Night was held at the Brunswick Town Hall; the whole Club was involved in the preparation and participation in the project.

The interior of the Brunswick Creche was painted over two weekends by the members of our Club, with the paint being supplied at cost and equipment loaned to us by Pettigrews.

A Social and Ladies Night was held on 15 October at Blythwood.

A Theatre Night was held in November and was well attended.

On Sunday 22 November the Asian Nurses Picnic was held at Ken Ratten’s property, “Sweet Meadows”, Nagambie.

The children’s picnic was held in December at John Coleman’s Hotel at Dromana; it was a very enjoyable day and each nurse was presented with a gift.

On Sunday 21 February a Barbecue was held at the home of Jock and Louise Summerfield at Mornington, it was a combined fellowship and fund raising function.

Since the commencement of operations in 1961 of the Opportunity Shop at 696 Sydney Road, the Club had distributed a total of four thousand five hundred pounds amongst the four charitable organisations which were active participants in the scheme.

In April a Dinner Dance was held at the Danish Club in Beaconsfield Parade, Middle Park and the evening was well attended and very enjoyable. The night had an international flavour with one of our Rotarians bringing along three people from South Africa.

The Elderly Citizens Welfare Centre in Brunswick was presented with a Television Set.
