District Governor: Stan Sullivan (Rotary Club of Benalla)
President: Bill Foy
Secretary: Col Spours
Treasurer: Felix Monger
Arrangements were made with Joe Bradbury of the Rotary Club of Essendon for an Exchange Student. Our Club favoured one from Thailand, but after a discussion with Joe we found that we would have to keep the student for two years. This the Club decided was too long and a further discussion with Joe indicated that the other countries where students were available was the Philippines, Rhodesia and Japan. Joe indicated that we had quite a few students from the Philippines in Australia and at this time there was trouble with Rhodesia, so Japan was the best choice.
Arrangements were then made with Joe Bradbury that Charles Johnson of the Rotary Club of Shepparton, who visits Japan several times a year, would arrange for a student. The student selected was Naoka Kuriki and it was not known until after she arrived that she was the daughter of the President of the Kowagoe Rotary Club who is also a wealthy doctor. According to Naoka her father owned three hospitals and she attended the College where the children of the royalty of Japan attend.
Arrangements were made for Naoka to attend the Canterbury Girls High School. A donation of $50 was made to the school’s Building Fund and a beautiful Japanese Geisha Girl Doll in a glass case, which was given by one of our members, was also donated as a token of our Club’s appreciation. Naoka arrived in Australia on 30 April 1966 and was expected to stay with twelve of our members for one month each. It did not work out that way as she was a rather difficult girl and one member’s family had her in their home for four months.
A most successful Dinner Dance was held at Ardmillan House and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.
A Theatre Night was held at the Tivoli Theatre and was very entertaining and proved to be a financial success.
The Asian nurses picnic was as usual a successful and most interesting day. In this instance, it took the form of a country picnic, Melbourne to Trentham for lunch, then on to Daylesford with members of the Rotary Club of Daylesford for an early tea and then home to Melbourne.
Prior to the picnic three members of our Club did a trial run and when in Daylesford contacted the Secretary of the Daylesford Club, who arranged the place to have tea. As usual the nurses were collected from the various hospitals by our members.
