The information on this page is from the Club’s publication “A History of the Rotary Club of Brunswick” Golden Jubilee 2nd edition, 2003:

District Governor: Vic French (Rotary Club of Coburg)
President: Bill Todd
Secretary: Col Spours
Treasurer: Felix Monger

Our Japanese student Naoka was presented with a toy Koala, as she had requested a gift to remind her of her stay in Australia. She had previously been taken to the Charter Night of the Waverley Rotary Club, to our President’s Changeover Night and the District 280 Dinner Dance. Her school friends also took her skating, bowling and horse riding.

Later in the year our Rotary Club paid all expenses for her to visit Alice Springs and it was arranged with the Alice Springs Rotary Club to show Naoka Ayres Rock and the surrounding areas. After this trip Naoka requested she visit Tasmania; this was not possible not only from an expense angle but as Tasmania had just had its worst bushfires in its history.

Naoka was also taken to the various cities in Victoria to show her our country areas. Naoka left at her own request after being with our Club for eleven months.

At this time our percentage with Rotary Foundation was 300% and at a Board Meeting it was decided that this was satisfactory for the time being.

Over the past two to three years our Club has given a great deal of thought to the establishment of a Sheltered Workshop in the Brunswick area. Several members of our Club had meetings with Dr Shepherd, the Medical Superintendent of the Geriatric Section at Mount Royal.

One of the problems discussed was the necessity of keeping work up to the shop. It was pointed out that Mount Royal had a workshop and at times it had been short of work, so it was decided at this stage that a Club effort be made to fill this gap.

Later in the Rotary year a Sub-Committee was formed of members of our Club to set in motion the formation of a Sheltered Workshop in the Brunswick area.

The “Public Speaking Contest” was again held at the Centenary Motors Showroom in Sydney Road, Brunswick. It was a most successful project and the standard of participants was high.

A Careers Night was held in the Brunswick Town Hall in conjunction with the Coburg Rotary Club; it was well attended and students from both Brunswick and Coburg were shown films and given advice on careers available by the members of both Rotary Clubs. This spread over two nights, twenty firms exhibited their products and gave advice. The Brunswick Council graciously did not charge for the use of the Hall and the Mayor of Brunswick opened the function.

The Asian nurses picnic was held at Jock Summerfield’s home at Mornington and it was a most enjoyable day. The nurses and the children were as usual well catered for along with the Rotarians and their wives. The nurses were picked up at the various hospitals and returned in the evening by the Rotarians and their wives.

A Theatre Night was held at the Regent Theatre and a Dinner Dance at Ardmillan House; both the functions were enjoyed very much and were very well attended.

A Ceylonese, Ranjith Jayatilaka, who had come to a Melbourne Hospital for an operation, was brought from Ceylon and while waiting for the operation was employed by two members of our Club. The travelling expenses were paid by the Brunswick Rotary Club and this cost was $475.
