At the commencement of this Rotary Year a letter and report was received from Charles Handwerk of a Sub-Committee investigating the formulation of a Sheltered Workshop in Brunswick. This Sub-Committee were members of our Rotary Club and was held on 1 May 1967.
The items discussed were Proposed Workshop Building, Board of Directors, Workshop Manager, Physically Handicapped Staff, Workshop Activities, Tools of Trade, Funds Required for Establishment, Period of Rotary Club Participation and Government Subsidy, and their conclusion was that the Workshop Project would be extremely worthwhile.
On 27 September 1967, a letter was sent to Mount Royal advising that our Club would proceed on a trial basis for one or two years, and our Club would review the situation at regular intervals.
On 25 October 1967 a meeting was held at Mount Royal and it was decided that a Sheltered Workshop Committee be formed and that Denzil Don be Chairman.
The Manager of Mount Royal, Mr ME Atkinson, stated that Denzil Don, Mr N Searle, Mr CL Gallagher, Dr SJH Shepherd and Miss E Pearce would represent Mount Royal, and Charles Handwerk reported that Ted Bailey, Lauri Penttila, George Churches, Peter Peppard and Charles Handwerk are the representatives of the Brunswick Rotary Club. It was also suggested that an invitation be extended to the Brunswick City Council.
It was resolved that the name of the project be called:
“Brunswick Sheltered Workshop”
and annex of
“Mount Royal Special Hospital for the Aged”
Parkville
and sponsored by
“The Rotary Club of Brunswick”
Charles Handwerk said that our Club Sub-Committee was investigating the matter of financing the project and had decided to endeavour to raise $5,000 to $10,000 by means of raffling a Ford Falcon Car supplied by Centenary Motors of Sydney Road, Brunswick at a very special price of $1,645.87, and that Clifton Brick Holdings Limited was prepared to grant a lease of a building, rent free, for a period of at least two years, and would pay all expenses associated with any building repairs, toilet facilities, electrical installation and painting where necessary.
1,000 tickets were sold at $10 each for the raffling of the car by members of the Club.
The Sheltered Workshop was officially opened on Friday 3 May 1968 by the Hon. Vance Dickie M.L.C.; quite a number of our Rotarians and helpers were present.
A Careers Night was held at the Brunswick Town Hall. It spread over two nights and a number of our Rotarians were present each night to advise students of careers and jobs available to them in the Brunswick area.
A most interesting and pleasant evening was spent at a “Trotting Night” held at the Show Grounds.
