Current Club Projects

Recent and ongoing club projects include the following range of activities:

Leadership in raising US$10,000 for urgent repair of tractors at the Don Bosco Agricultural College in Fuiloro, East Timor, to support local self-sustaining agricultural production for the rural community. The college is in the District of Lautem (eastern Timor Leste) and the tractors are much needed to support harvesting during the short farming season.

Update: For the 2006-07 harvest, funding for the tractors has assisted more than 400 local families. With good rain in the region, two crops have been planted, and surplus crops are planned to be sold to bring some revenue back to the local community.

Funded a ShelterBox, which was used to provide emergency housing and equipment (the essentials for up to 10 people for a prolonged period) following a tropical cyclone that devastated Karachi, Pakistan. The tropical cyclone left hundreds dead in countries in the region and many thousands homeless, along with tens of thousands of evacuations and millions affected by power and water shortages. In Karachi, 213 people were reported killed.

Thanks to the operational management in place and the quick global response able to be provided, ShelterBoxes are able to be used quickly to support affected communities. The response can be to any kind of major disaster, such as floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic acitivity, cyclones and hurricanes, war etc.

Established Brunswick Youth Art Exhibition in 2007 in partnership with Moreland City Council, Brunswick Secondary College and the Sydney Road Community School. Prize competition for exhibition poster, and public voting for favourite artist. Hundreds of votes for more than 40 separate students were received. Exhibition planned to be an annual event. The event was included in the District 9800 PACE initiative (Partnerships Advancing Community Engagement).
In 2008, as part of Rotary's district PACE initiative, is calling for volunteers to help run the international street soccer event, the 2008 Melbourne Homeless World Cup. The event is designed to highlight the issue of homelessness and poverty.
Plans are progressing for a vocational education facility to be located near the community medical clinic the club established in Bagong Barrio, to create employment and business opportunities. We expect the project will go ahead in partnership with local Rotarians in Manila.
